A useful training manual for the implementation and management of morbidity and mortality meetings — Saving Babies 2003–2005: Fifth Perinatal Care Survey of South Africa (PDF)
“A very valuable tool for sites wanting to start with audits or to introduce new members of staff to maternal and perinatal audits.” — Saving Babies 2003: Fourth Perinatal Care Survey of South Africa (PDF)
Saving Mothers and Babies was developed in response to the high maternal and perinatal mortality rates found in most developing countries. Learning material used in the book is based on the results of the annual confidential enquiries into maternal deaths and the Saving Mothers and Saving Babies reports published in South Africa. This book should be used together with the Perinatal Problem Identification Programme (PPIP).
The five units cover the concept of mortality audit, the causes of maternal and perinatal mortality, the management of mortality meetings, and the use of the Perinatal Problem Identification Programme (PPIP). It addresses maternal, stillbirth and early neonatal mortality rates in cities, towns and rural areas, the causes and avoidable factors, and ways of preventing many of these deaths.
