The aim of this manual is to enable health care workers to improve their knowledge of the care of mothers before and after delivery in clinics and district hospitals. The manual includes of 7 units, which cover antenatal care, the assessment of fetal growth and condition during pregnancy, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, antepartum haemorrhage, preterm labour and preterm rupture of the membranes, the puerperium and family planning, and medical problems during pregnancy and the puerperium. The manual also includes 6 skills workshops, which cover the general examination at the first antenatal clinic visit, the examination of the abdomen in pregnancy, vaginal examination in pregnancy, screening tests for syphilis, the routine use of the antenatal card, and measuring blood pressure and proteinuria.
